Jewelry Care

Jewelry may be made of precious metals and gemstones, but they aren’t as tough as people think. They’re subject to scratches, chips, dulling, tarnishing and plain old dirt. Jewelry was not only made to be worn, but to be passed on to future generations, and they need care to remain at the height of their beauty and value.

In General
All jewelry should be kept in a place that’s clean and dry, preferably jewelry boxeslined with fabric. It’s best if they’re kept in their own compartments and shouldn’t be allowed to jumble together and scratch each other.

Also, they should be cleaned by a professional jeweler every six months or so. Gemstones shouldn’t be handled with fingers, as fingers always contain corrosive oil and salt. Some jewelry can be cleaned ultrasonically, but ultrasound can damage other jewelry, like pearls and certain colored gemstones.

Colored Gemstones
Some colored gemstones get their color from being treated, and the buyer should ask the jeweler how these gemstones should be cared for. They should be kept in soft pouches and away from harsh chemicals, which include perfumes and cosmetics. The gemstones should be wiped with a soft cloth after wearing.

Diamonds
Even though a diamond is the hardest substance in nature, it still shouldn’t be exposed to bleach or any other harsh chemical. Nor should physically demanding work be done while wearing a diamond, because it’s still subject to chipping from a hard blow. Diamond jewelry should be taken off before swimming in a chlorinated pool.
Diamonds can be dipped in jewelry cleaners, soapy water or a solution of ammonia and water, and then gently brushed clean.

Precious metals
Gold jewelry should be removed before washing or showering because soap can leave a dulling film on it. Gold, silver jewelry, platinum jewelry and other precious metals can also be cleaned with a commercial cleaner or with soapy water and ammonia. Again, they should be kept from bleach or other harsh chemicals, and dried with a soft jewelry polishing cloth after being washed. They should also be kept in their own pouch or fabric lined compartment to keep from being scratched.
